Rhone-Alps
This region of France (officially known as Auvgerne-Rhône-Alpes) is on the eastern edge of France, bordering Switzerland and Italy. The capital city is Lyon, a fascinating, vibrant, and highly underrated city in France, especially considering its the 3rd largest metropolitan area.
Lyon is generally considered the gateway to the Alps and her foothills, a truly magical place in France full of stunning mountain scenery, including Mont Blanc, the tallest peak in France.
Towns like Annecy, Chamonix, and Chambery are quaintly nestled next to mountains and lakes, and hiking and adventure activities abound in summer. In winter, Europeans flock to the region to hill the slopes with their skis and snowboards.
