The Paris Neighborhood You Should Stay In Is…
Montmartre

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with charm, character, and a slightly slower pace, Montmartre is a great pick. Tucked into the 18th arrondissement on the north end of the city, Montmartre wasn’t actually part of Paris proper until the mid-1800’s, which helps explain why it still feels so distinct.
With its cobblestone streets, hilltop views, and bohemian vibe, it almost feels more like a village than a big city neighborhood, although it does have a major landmark: the Sacré Coeur Basilica.
Montmartre is a bit removed from central Paris, but what you get in return is a romantic, personality-filled place that’s definitely worth hopping on the metro for.
Notable Characteristics of Montmartre:
Cobblestone streets Full of Charm
Montmartre is full of ivy-covered narrow lanes, sloped alleys, and picturesque staircases — giving it a true village-on-a-hill atmosphere that’s one of the most visually charming areas in Paris.
Home to Sacré-Cœur and sweeping views
The basilica sits at the highest point in Paris and offers some of the best views in the city.
Laid-back café culture
Perfect for slow mornings or afternoon breaks, with plenty of cafés that still feel local.
Lively bar and nightlife scene
You’ll find a good mix of casual bars and nightlife and historic cabaret venues, including the famous Moulin Rouge.
Not centrally located
Montmartre is fairly removed from the center of Paris, so you’ll need to rely on the metro/taxis more here to get into the center.
3 Great Hotel Options in Montmartre
**Hôtel Monsieur Aristide**

Hotel Monsieur Aristide fully leans into Montmartre’s bohemian charm. This 25-room boutique hotel is set in a 19th-century building and features individually decorated rooms filled with vintage finds, giving each space a cozy, one-of-a-kind feel.
There’s a strong focus on sustainability throughout the hotel, and the on-site Café Aristide continues the laid-back vibe with a mix of bistro dishes and cocktails. The garden terrace is especially lovely — perfect for a slow breakfast or evening drink.

**Terrass Hotel**

Terrass Hotel is a stylish boutique hotel just off Rue Lepic, one of my favorite streets in Montmartre. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, with a subtle nod to the area’s artistic roots, and the hotel also offers extras like spa services, massages, and fitness classes.
However, the biggest highlight of this hotel is the view: many rooms overlook the Paris skyline, and some even have a clear shot of the Eiffel Tower, and the rooftop terrace and restaurant’s panoramic views are phenomenal.

**Hotel des Arts**

Hotel des Arts is a quirky boutique hotel in the best way — full of charm and character, and perfectly located for exploring Montmartre. Rooms are cozy and stylish, with views over the courtyard or rooftops.
The hotel has a really fun history too. At its inception, it was once home to dancers from the Moulin Rouge, along with artists and writers who lived and worked in the neighborhood.

Let me introduce Myself…
Hi, I’m Stephanie
I’m a lifelong Francophile who’s visited France 14 times (and Paris 8!). I’ve explored nearly 100 towns and cities across the country, from the big-name sights to tiny villages most travelers miss.
I don’t live in France (though I daydream about it constantly), but I’ve spent months and months traveling all over the country — staying in hotels, navigating public transit, and yes, eating a lot of French cheese and pastries.
So, all of my recommendations come from a combination of extensive research and firsthand experience as a traveler. My goal is always to help you feel confident and excited about planning your own trip to France!
